First in our DOD trio, we have the Overdrive Preamp 250. This circuit architecture hasn't changed much since the 70s, let alone 2013. Drawing on the MXR Distortion+, it uses an op-amp to make your signal louder, and some silicon clipping diodes to add distortion. Easy peasy, LM741-squeezy. DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 Reissue. Got an early 90s unit recently, the chinese reissue with JRC4558 chip. I'm still really surprised how good it sounds. So i do think this is very neglected and underrated pedal. I've added polarity protection diode and pulldown resistor for the input. The chip is stated as KA4558 in the italian reissue schematic.

The DOD Overdrive 250 distortion pedal is very similar to the MXR Distortion Plus pedal. This project uses the same Ready-For-Transfer Printed Circuit Board Layout file that is used in the MXR Distortion Plus Project on this site. This is really a great sounding distortion pedal, remenisent of some of the great sounds of the 1970's.

For such a lean circuit, the 250 is relatively articulate and punchy as a distortion. However, as the preamp name suggests, it functions best at lower and mid gain settings with the level up. Its lack of proper tone controls limits its utility as a pre, forcing reliance on an amp or EQ following the 250.

The DOD 250 Preamp Overdrive debuted in the late '70s, alongside the very similar MXR Distortion + and Micro Amp. While the Distortion + has a very distinct, and—dare I say?—one dimensional quality, and the Micro Amp had a very singular purpose (clean boost), the 250 was harder to pigeon hole.

The yellow OD-250 reissue is also available new cheaply, made in China. They are almost the same as the YJM308, but have more low end like the original. They use the same circuit board as the 308, just a few different component values. The 308 is clearer and brighter than the new Yellow 250.
